Advocus was founded in 1964 to preserve the lawyer’s role in real estate transactions for the benefit of the client. Since that time, we have always made it a priority to advocate for the interests of lawyers and the clients they serve.

Throughout our history, we have embarked on media-relations campaigns and other promotional efforts to spread our core message, “Buying or Selling a Home? See a Lawyer First.”
Examples:

In addition to these consumer-facing efforts, we have a long track record of fighting for the interests of lawyers and the consumers they serve. Over the years, our CEO and other leaders have made many trips to Washington to meet with legislators, lobby, and testify before various committees.

See inside for a sampling of articles and links that illustrate our efforts. Many are also available on the Advocacy in Action page of our website.

Looking at the industry, we continue to voice our concern about the dumbing-down of the examination process and rail against the perils of letting other segments of the real estate industry drive the business and offset the lawyer’s role. In the spirit of the expression “Physician heal thyself,” we urge lawyers to be unified in the goal of providing a valuable service to the public.
To that end, we continue to urge lawyers to actively support our legislative, regulatory, and other advocacy efforts to protect the public and the profession. It is not an understatement to say that the practice of real estate law and clients’ peace of mind are both at risk.
Our organization continues its long history of financial success and profitability despite these and other challenges, the changing environment, the pandemic, and the trend toward remote work. We found new ways to conduct work and serve our customers, gained many operations efficiencies, and continued to move forward thanks to our flexible nature and our commitment to improving technology and communication.
Driven by two goals—unlocking shareholder value and multi-state expansion—in January 2022 we announced our acquisition by Guaranteed Rate Companies. While there were several good reasons to pursue a change in ownership, our highest priority was to find a buyer with a similar vision, a desire to preserve our business model, and the resources to expand into other markets. With the support of Guaranteed Rate, we will continue to be ardent and effective advocates for lawyers in the conveyancing process.
Guaranteed Rate’s President and CEO Victor Ciardelli said it best, "I understand and appreciate the importance of the lawyer’s role in real estate transactions, which is why Guaranteed Rate is committed to the lawyer-agent business model created by ATG [now Advocus]. We look forward to building on ATG’s success by giving its lawyers and the consumers they serve the technology, tools, and additional support that will enable ATG to flourish in the years to come."
